An Illinois-based dairy cooperative last month recalled hundreds of gallons of milk over concerns that they could be contaminated with “food-grade cleaning agents.”
Prairie Farms wrote in a notice posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that it was “made aware of a potential quality issue” involving select gallons of fat-free milk on Nov. 24, and that affected gallons were recalled and removed from store shelves following an investigation.
The recalled gallons were produced at a plant in Dubuque, Iowa, and distributed to Woodman’s grocery stores in Wisconsin and Illinois. The cooperative said that about 320 of the gallons were sold before the issue was discovered.
The affected products show a DEC08 code date and PLT19-145 plant code during a production timeframe of 17:51 to 21:23. Consumers who purchased products with those code dates should dispose of it or return it to the store for a refund.
The notice did not indicate whether any illnesses or injuries related to the recall had been reported.
“Prairie Farms is working in partnership with regulatory authorities and Woodman’s Markets to fully investigate the matter and comply with all necessary recall procedures,” the coop wrote in the statement.
