5 Minutes with IEN: Why Power Quality Matters

It's responsible for about 70% of unplanned downtime at a facility.

Power quality is extremely important to any operation running industrial equipment. According to Karen Cheung, product manager at Eaton, power quality is responsible for about 70% of unplanned downtime at a facility.

Cheung says that most of the time, a problem comes from an issue within the plant, like equipment not working optimally, or the way the equipment is run regarding duty cycles and production schedules.

When it comes to root cause analysis, sometimes more data isn't the answer. Instead, Cheung says manufacturing professionals should focus on key contributors. She also suggests using equipment that can take aggregate measurements which help focus your limited time and bandwidth on the things that really matter, like power quality events.
