Business Sues Couple Who Left One-Star Google Review

The owner allegedly demanded the couple take down their reviews, and filed suit when they didn't.

According to Portland’s KGW8, a conflict between a business and a prospective customer has reached epic proportions, as the two sides ramp up their public battle.

Washington couple Autumn Knepper and Adam Marsh reportedly each posted a one-star Google review for Executive Roof Services (ERS) and filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

They say the roofing company’s receptionist was rude to them on multiple occasions and that they were denied access to a project report detailing work being done on their roof.

The business owner allegedly demanded the couple take down their reviews. When they didn’t, they received a notice that they were being sued for $112,000 for defamation.

An attorney for ERS says Knepper and Marsh aren’t entitled to a report on the project scope because they hadn’t hired the company, their landlord did.

He says their subsequent intent in writing the reviews was to harm the business “for the purpose of getting a report they weren't entitled to."

Paul Levy, an attorney with Public Citizen Litigation Group, says that if the review is truthful, the couple should be legally protected.

“I think the business has a lot to lose by litigating it,” he told KGW8.
