Retailers Team Up in Thinly Veiled Attack on Amazon

The group wants to force e-commerce platforms to verify information about third-party sellers.

A group of retailers, including Walmart and Target, has established a group called the Buy Safe America Coalition.

Together with dozens of other industry stakeholders, the group hopes to target online counterfeits.

Reuters says the coalition intends to push legislation that requires e-commerce platforms to verify information about third-party sellers.

This is likely an attempt to target Amazon’s marketplace, which has been criticized for its ineffectiveness at policing third-party sellers.

While Amazon requires its sellers post accurate information about products, it has often been denounced for its lack of enforcement.

In an attempt to add transparency, Amazon will post the names and addresses of U.S.-based third-party sellers starting Sept. 1.

Amazon says the move will “help customers make informed shopping decisions.”
