Mississauga, Ontario, Canada – March 30, 2009: Petro-Canada today announced their new EcoSia brand, a suite of products from their current line-up which possess environmentally-friendly characteristics. The EcoSia line will make it easier for lubricant customers to identify those products that meet their environmental goals without compromising performance. The product offering spans a diverse range of applications and customer segments including, but not limited to, lubricants and fluids for forestry, agriculture, drilling, mining, construction and general manufacturing.

“We developed the EcoSia line because there was a need in the marketplace to identify those lubricant products we manufacture that have environmentally-friendly attributes,” stated Randy Koenig, Vice President Lubricants, Petro-Canada. “With increasing enthusiasm and need for environmentally-friendly lubricants, we also wanted our customers to be aware of the fact that many of our products, that they already use, are environmentally responsible without compromising product performance.”

Petro-Canada’s EcoSia line meets the following criteria which are based on recognized industry tests:

  • Inherently or readily biodegradable* (based on component or product data obtained using the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) 301B testing guideline, or OECD 306 testing guideline (Biodegradability in Seawater)).
  • Not environmentally toxic (based on United Nations Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals).**

* Readily biodegradable is defined as rapid and complete mineralization of the substance, with more than 60% of the product biodegrading within 28 days (OECD 301B or OECD 306). Inherently biodegradable is defined based on the results of OECD 301B biodegradability studies where more than 20% and less than 60% of the substance biodegraded within 28 days.

** Not acutely toxic to fish, daphnia or algae according to the United Nations Globally Harmonized System (GHS) criteria.
