Extreme Maintenance At 1,700 Feet

Wed, 09/15/2010 - 7:00am

After watching this video, you might take that free over-the-air TV or morning radio show a little less for granted. The 1,700-foot towers that broadcast those signals need occasional maintenance, just like any other piece of machinery. That means a brave soul — like the men in the video below — have to make the treacherous journey.

And if climbing a few ladders sounds easy to you, let it be known that workers commonly freeclimb the upper reaches, which means they have no fall arrest device in place. Turns out it can actually be more tiring to disconnect and reconnect a carabineer every few feet. And believe it or not, OSHA actually does permit this massively scary practice.
