Study: No Higher Cancer Rate At CT Pratt Plants

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — An 11-year study of the incidence of brain cancer at jet engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney in the state ended Thursday with university researchers saying they found no statistically significant elevations in the rate of cancer among workers.

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Illinois at Chicago said they identified 723 workers diagnosed with tumors between 1976 and 2004 at the United Technologies Corp. subsidiary. The tumors were malignant, benign or unspecified and included 277 cases of brain cancer.

DETROIT (AP) — The marketing people at Chevrolet make no secret of the goal for the new diesel version of the Chevrolet Cruze: Take sales from Volkswagen.

In fact, they're rolling out the car in 13 markets where VW sells the most diesel versions of its Jetta, another compact.

"Jetta owns the segment," concedes Phil Caruso, small-car marketing manager for the General Motors' Chevy brand. "We're looking to be a key competitor and take over some of that business."

U.S. Durable Goods Orders Rise In April

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. orders for long-lasting manufactured goods rebounded in April, buoyed by more demand for aircraft and stronger business investment. The gains suggest economic growth may be holding steady this spring.

Orders for durable goods, items expected to last at least three years, rose 3.3 percent last month from March, the Commerce Department said Friday. That followed a 5.9 decline in March.

A measure of business investment plans increased 1.2 percent. And the government revised the March figure to show a 0.9 percent gain, instead of a slight decrease.

France Won't Force Companies To Cap Executive Pay

PARIS (AP) — The French government is trying to woo executives and entrepreneurs, amid concerns that it has antagonized the businesses needed to reinvigorate the economy.

Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici announced Friday that the government no longer plans to push for a law to cap executive salaries in the private sector. Instead, Moscovici told reporters that he was in discussions with business leaders and he hoped companies would agree to institute their own limits. He did not give details.

VW Plant Reaches Production Milestone

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — Volkswagen has reached another production milestone at its assembly plant in Chattanooga.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press (http://bit.ly/18lupfw) reports that the 250,000th Passat midsize sedan has rolled off the assembly line.

The milestone announced Thursday comes barely more than two years since production began at the Tennessee plant.

The Chattanooga plant completed its first customer car on April 18, 2011, and the 100,000th on May 31, 2012.

Tesla Repays DOE Loan Nine Years Early

DETROIT (AP) — Tesla Motors, which makes a highly acclaimed $70,000 electric car, has paid off a startup loan from the U.S. government nine years early.

The Palo Alto, Calif., company said it wired in a $451.8 million payment to the government on Wednesday. The money, coupled with two prior payments, paid off a $465 million loan Tesla got from the Department of Energy loan in 2010 to foster development of advanced-technology vehicles.

Tesla used money from a $968 million stock and note sale that closed Wednesday to repay the debt.

Ford To End Auto Production In Australia In 2016

SYDNEY (AP) — Ford Motor Co. said Thursday it will close its two Australian auto plants, ending production in the country in 2016, amid soaring manufacturing costs and plummeting sales.

The closure of the U.S. automaker's plants in the state of Victoria will mean the loss of 1,200 jobs and will transform the company into an import-only brand in Australia. Ford began making cars in Australia in 1925 and is the third largest auto manufacturer in the country.

Chevy Spark To Be Among Lowest-Price Electric Cars

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors Co. says the Spark EV subcompact will be among the lowest-priced electric cars in the U.S.

The electric Spark will have a starting price of $27,495 when it goes on sale next month in California and Oregon. GM also is offering a low-mileage lease for $199 per month, with $999 due when the lease is signed.

With a $7,500 federal tax credit, the car's price falls to $19,995. The 36-month lease includes 12,000 miles per year.

The Spark EV can go about 82 miles on a single charge and gets the gasoline equivalent of 119 miles per gallon.
