U.S. Safety Agency Investigating Suzuki SUVs

DETROIT (AP) — U.S. safety regulators said Tuesday that they are investigating problems with air bag sensors in the seats of some small Suzuki SUVs.

The probe covers 205,000 vehicles including Grand Vitaras from the 2006 through 2011 model years and SX4s from 2007 through 2011.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says on its website that 128 owners have complained about problems with sensors in the front passenger seats that turn off the air bag when a child is sitting there.

Boeing Nets Orders For 102 Stretch 787s

Glenwood Springs Plastics Company Shutting Down

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — A manufacturer of high-tech plastic parts for everything from skateboards to jet engine components, which was touted in 2011 as one of the Colorado companies to watch by a state agency and investors, has called it quits.

Fiberforge co-founder Jon Fox-Rubin said the company based in Glenwood Springs struggled to become profitable with a broad range of offerings — including engineering services, parts manufacture and automated equipment — but couldn't make it successful. Now he is trying to sell the equipment to other companies.

VT, Quebec Announce Electric Car Corridor

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Starting this fall, people who drive electric vehicles should be able to travel the 138-mile route between Burlington, Vt. and Montreal without worrying they'll run short of a charge thanks to a planned electric vehicle charging corridor, Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin and Quebec Premier Pauline Marois announced in Montreal.

Initially the corridor will have more than 20 charging stations along the route, although it's expected the number of stations will increase.

Gevo Restarts Isobutanol Production At MN Plant

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Gevo, which makes fuels and chemicals from plant matter, has restarted commercial production of isobutanol at its plant in Luverne, Minn.

Isobutanol is an alternative to ethanol that is blended into fuel.

Gevo Inc. CEO Patrick Gruber said in a statement on Tuesday that there was some microbial contamination at the plant that the company has since learned how to control and manage by making equipment modifications, changing fermentation conditions and improving operating procedures.

Smithfield Foods Lays Off 120 More At VA Plant

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Smithfield Foods Inc. said Tuesday that it is laying off 120 more workers as part of its previously announced closure of a Virginia facility that makes hot dogs and deli meat.

The Smithfield, Va.-based pork producer plans to close the Portsmouth plant in the middle of August, said Jeff Gough, Smithfield's senior vice president for human resources.

Layoffs at the Smithfield Packing Co. facility began in January, with more than 400 workers to be affected by the time plant is closed.
