High working loads and continuous operation generate oil mist inside a gearbox and thermal expansion causes these fumes to exhaust through the air breather. The result is an oily mixture of dust that coats the machinery, and oil dripping down from the air breather. More serious still, is the reduced life of mechanical seals caused by the low level pressure and vacuum conditions that result from an oil saturated air breather.
