Toyota Begins Manufacturing Corollas In China Factory
NAGOYA, May 14 (Kyodo) — Toyota Motor Corp. said Monday its new factory in Changchun in the northeastern province of Jilin started manufacturing the Corolla sedan for the local market.
Sichuan FAW Toyota Motor Co., a fifty-fifty venture between Toyota and FAW Group Corp., plans to produce 100,000 units of the model per year, bolstering Toyota's annual vehicle output capacity in China to a combined 920,000 units, it said.
The leading Japanese automaker built the factory at a cost of around 3.8 billion yuan, or about 50 billion yen, creating 2,000 jobs, it said.
Toyota senior managing director Hirofumi Muta told a factory inauguration ceremony, "Toyota's Changchun operations have been expanding thanks to support from government officials and other Chinese people."
Meanwhile, Toyota Boshoku Corp., a Toyota group supplier based in Kariya, Aichi Prefecture, said its joint venture with a unit of the FAW Group in Changchun has started manufacturing seats and other interior items for the Corolla at a local plant.
