TOKYO, April 6 (Kyodo) — Toyota Motor Corp. said Friday it has sold five million pickup trucks, minivans and sport utility vehicles in markets outside Japan as of the end of March under its global strategic vehicle project since the start of their sales in 2004.

Under the Innovative International Multipurpose Vehicle project to develop and produce vehicles overseas to best suit local demand, Toyota created 330 variations of the vehicles using two vehicle platforms.

The vehicles are made in 11 locations worldwide, with diesel engines supplied from Thailand and gasoline engines produced in Indonesia, and sold in 170 countries outside of Japan as of the end of 2011, according to the company.

"As the markets continue to grow, we expect further growth of sales," said Toyota's managing officer Kazuhiro Kobayashi at a press conference held in Tokyo.
