KINGSPORT, Tenn. (AP) — A glass plant in Kingsport could lay off as many as 100 employees when it shuts down one of two production lines early next year.
AGC Flat Glass spokesman Chris Correnti told the Kingsport Times-News the company had planned to rebuild one of the plant's furnaces in the spring, but now those plans are on hold (http://bit.ly/stDWio).
Correnti said the timing of the rebuild depends on the marketplace, but they are not considering the shutdown to be permanent.
Some of those working on the production line to be closed may be offered other positions.
The plant manufactures glass for the solar industry and has been hit hard by an influx of imports from China.
AGC Flat Glass, based in Alpharetta, Ga., is owned by Asahi Glass of Japan.
