Delaware Tech Gets $5M Training Grant

Mon, 10/03/2011 - 9:37am

DOVER, Del. (AP) — Delaware Technical and Community College has been awarded a nearly $5 million federal grant to create job training programs in growing sectors that are seeking skilled workers.

Several new programs will be created to educate students in renewable energy. Some funds will expand a manufacturing efficiency lab. The grant was part of $500 million awarded to community colleges nationwide this week.

College officials hope the programs could prepare workers for jobs at Fisker Automotive and Bloom Energy. Fisker has announced plans to hire 2,500 workers at the former General Motors plant near Newport. Bloom announced plans for 900 jobs at a new plant on an old Chrysler site in Newark.

Delaware Tech President Orlando George announced the plans Friday. He credits Delaware's congressional delegation with securing the funds.
