United Steelworkers Ratify Deal With Ludlum

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The United Steelworkers have ratified a four-year contract with Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Technology Inc. covering 3,000 workers at Allegheny Ludlum plants in western Pennsylvania and an ATI plant in Albany, Ore.

The union and Pittsburgh-based ATI announced the tentative deal June 30, the day the last contract expired. But retired workers urged rank-and-file members to reject the contract, saying it would increase the retirees' medical insurance costs from about $40 per month to $200 per month.

After the union rejected the contract late last month, the sides agreed to extend the old deal while they negotiated a revised deal aimed at addressing those concerns.

Allegheny Technologies says in a release Monday that the union has "overwhelmingly" approve the new deal, which runs through June 30, 2015.
