YORK, Pa. (AP) — A central Pennsylvania paperboard plant will be closing this fall, leaving 78 people without jobs.

Officials said the Yorktowne Paperboard Corp. plant in York County's Spring Garden Township will close by mid-October.

The plant, which opened in 1945, makes paperboard used by manufacturers of tubes and cores around which paper is rolled.

Company CEO Philip Jones said in a statement that the closure and other moves will allow the company "to compete effectively in today's market environment.

Employees have been notified of the Oct. 17 layoff date. A notice filed with the state indicates that 63 of the workers are represented by the United Steelworkers.
