Plans For Plant Under Scutiny In NC

Tue, 07/19/2011 - 9:06am

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (AP) — Plans for a $95 million sulfur processing plant at the port in Morehead City, N.C. is drawing fire from some coastal-area residents who have scheduled a meeting to discuss details of the project.

The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at the Crystal Coast Civic Center.

Leigh Johnson of the Clean County Coalition said residents recently learned of the proposal by PCS Phosphate, a Canada-based fertilizer company, and are concerned about smells, acid rain and the impact on beach and retail tourism.

PCS spokeswoman Michelle Vaught said the plant design meets all state regulations. Vaught said company officials have been meeting for more than a year with state and local leaders, who have discussed economic incentives for the project.
