SCRIBA, N.Y. (AP) — An aluminum plant in northern New York has launched a $200 million expansion to meet rising demand for sheet aluminum for the auto industry, and expects to create 100 new jobs.

Novelis's plant in Scriba, 33 miles northwest of Syracuse, currently employs 650 people. It's the world's largest producer of rolled aluminum.

Novelis says the expansion will allow the plant to produce 200,000 tons more aluminum sheet. Car makers are using more aluminum in vehicles to help improve fuel economy.

The Oswego facility also produces aluminum sheet for beverage cans and building construction.

The company is getting incentives from the state and the Oswego County Industrial Development Agency.
