Firefighter Injured At Four-Alarm Peanut Butter Fire

Tue, 09/21/2010 - 4:54am

SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle firefighters have controlled a four-alarm blaze that tore through the former Sunny Jimpeanut butter plant in south Seattle, injuring a firefighter and sending smoke high into the air.

An estimated 120 firefighters responded Monday to the vacant, city-owned, two-story building. Fire officials say one firefighter was injured by a piece of falling siding. He was reported in stable condition Monday night at Harborview Medical Center.

Fire Department spokeswoman Helen Fitzpatrick says investigators won't know the cause until they can get inside the building, possibly Tuesday.

At one point during the Monday evening commute, the blaze — and several other traffic mishaps — caused a 10-mile-long backup on southbound Interstate 5, which passes near the factory.
