OSHA Nails Wis. Plant With $96,000 Fine

Tue, 04/27/2010 - 6:59am

TOMAHAWK, Wis. (AP) — A company where a 2008 explosion killed three Wisconsin workers has been fined nearly $100,000.

The fines stem from seven safety violations levied against Packaging Corporation of America.

A federal safety agency noted the violations during an October inspection. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, proposes a penalty of $70,000 for one willful violation and $26,500 for six serious violations.

The company has 15 days to pay or contest the findings.

A message left Tuesday at the company's headquarters in Lake Forest, Ill. was not immediately returned.

The citations stem from the company's handling of caustic solutions.

An unrelated explosion at its Tomahawk site in 2008 killed three workers when sparks ignited flammable gas in a storage tank.
