Explosions, Smoke At Wis. Chemical Plant Fire Force People From Homes

Dozens of residents stayed away from their homes Tuesday while crews waited for a chemical plant fire to burn itself out. The fire broke out at Columbus Chemical Industries' warehouse late Monday, and three explosions rocked the building just after firefighters arrived, Acting Fire Chief Mark Kenevan said.

Canada warns US Steel about temporary shutdown

The Canadian government warned United States Steel Corp. on Wednesday that it must live up to its production commitments at the former Stelco Inc. plants in Ontario which it has temporarily shut down. Industry Minister Tony Clement said he sent a letter indicating that the shutdown at plants in Hamilton and Nanticoke, Ontario, may violate commitments the U.

Federal report calls Canada a laggard in business research and development

A new federal report says Canada lags other countries in business research and development, despite providing substantial tax breaks to the corporate sector. The Science, Technology and Innovation Council says Canada ranks sixth among G7 industrialized countries in R&D as a proportion of gross domestic product.

Valve manufacturer Velan hit by strike involving 530 Quebec employees

Industrial valve maker Velan Inc. (TSX:VLN) has been hit by a strike at its Quebec plants. Velan said Monday the stoppage involves 530 workers, out of its worldwide workforce of 1,800. Management "cannot determine the possible impact on its operations and results at this time," the company stated.

Eveready to be acquired by U.S.-based Clean Harbors

Eveready Inc. (TSX:EIS), an Edmonton-based energy services company, has signed a definitive C$464 million deal to be acquired by Clean Harbors Inc. (NYSE:CLH), North America's biggest provider of environmental and hazardous waste management services. The pricetag of the cash and stock deal, announced early Wednesday, values the Canadian company at C$11 a share or about C$202 million.

Hydraulics have been an essential part of industrial technology for well over a century, which means maintenance technicians may find themselves confronted with anything from the latest high-tech fittings to hundred year-old port configurations. Most of the time, there’s no real way to know exactly what’s under the accumulated paint and grime covering the valve or manifold that just failed, but the technician is still expected to be able to identify the connector and replace it quickly and without error.
