I'm Going To Shoot You... With Sound
In the 2002 movie Minority Report — which has become the template for technically-possible science fiction — characters use guns that fire bursts of sound in order to disable, not kill, their enemies. While many remember the movie for the touch- and hologram-based computing, this technology is another that could find real-world use in the near future. Chiara Daraio of the California Institute of Technology has helped to develop “bullets” made of sound waves that can be used by the military and in medicine. These “sound bullets” are compact bursts of acoustic energy that can form and travel in host material.
