PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Justice says Caterpillar Inc. has agreed to pay $2.55 million to settle allegations it violated the U.S. Clean Air Act. The department said Thursday that it believes the Peoria, Ill.-based heavy equipment-maker shipped more than 590,000 engines that lacked proper emissions controls.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida's jobless workers are facing additional hurdles to qualify for state unemployment compensation. Several new requirements go into effect Monday under a law passed this year to help reduce unemployment taxes paid by businesses. Claimants will be required to contact at least five potential employers or else meet with a state reemployment services representative each week.
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Engineers and technical workers at Spirit Aerosystems have voted to reject the company's contract offer. Members of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace voted Thursday on a 9 1/2-year contract proposal. A strike vote was not on the ballot.
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) — A jury in Ohio has ruled in favor of Ford Motor Co. in the lawsuit of a former patrol officer severely burned in a crash in one of the automaker's police cruisers. The Vindicator of Youngstown reports the jury reached its verdict Tuesday, denying former Austintown officer Ross Linert's request for monetary damages.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of people seeking unemployment benefits dropped last week to the lowest level since early April, a sign the job market may be healing after a recent slump. The Labor Department said Thursday that weekly applications fell 24,000 to a seasonally adjusted 398,000.

ELLISVILLE, Miss. (AP) — GE Aviation, a unit of the General Electric Co., plans to spend $56 million to build a second manufacturing plant in Mississippi to produce advanced composite components for aircraft engines and systems. GE Aviation plans to employ 250 workers at the new Ellisville plant when full production is achieved around 2018.
