LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. (AP) — The Greenbrier Cos. said Thursday it has received orders for 3,700 new railcars valued at about $285 million. The orders are primarily for double-stack intermodal cars, boxcars, covered hopper cars and tank cars for North America and various car types for the European market.
TOKYO (AP) — Japanese manufacturing giants Hitachi Ltd. and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. denied Thursday they are in talks to combine their businesses, just hours after Hitachi's president said an announcement was imminent. Both companies reiterated that media reports about a possible business combination were untrue but the speculation made waves with investors who pushed up shares of both companies.
SPRINGDALE, Ark. (AP) — Tyson Foods says a truck driver has been killed outside its plant in Springdale. Company spokesman Worth Sparkman says the driver was accidentally pinned between two truck trailers outside of its Berry Street plant about 11 p.m. Wednesday. Sparkman declined to release the driver's name of age.
DETROIT (AP) — After years of big discounts, GM is finally getting a good price for its cars and trucks, and it's helping the company's bottom line. General Motors Co. surprised Wall Street Thursday by doubling its second-quarter profit. A big reason was higher prices for its vehicles worldwide.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — California stores began recalling ground turkey meat Wednesday following an outbreak of salmonella that has killed one and sickened dozens across the nation. The fresh and frozen tainted meat has been sold in California under the brand names of Kroger, Honeysuckle White and Riverside, according to the state Department of Public Health spokesman Mike Sicilia.
DUNCAN, S.C. (AP) — Auto parts producer Fehrer (FAIR'-er) Automotive is expanding in South Carolina, creating 130 new jobs over five years. State and local officials announced Tuesday the company plans to invest $14 million renovating an existing 100,000-square-foot facility in Spartanburg County.
GREER, S.C. (AP) — German automaker BMW is adding 100 new jobs at its South Carolina plant and shifting to a six-day work week as it ramps up production for its vehicles. BMW Group Board Member Harald Krueger announced Wednesday the company will be looking for engineers, information technology specialists and production management associates to work at the plant in Greer.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Federal officials said on Tuesday that an Alcoa Inc. subsidiary in central Pennsylvania will pay more than $540,000 to settle claims that it discriminated against minorities and women. Alcoa Mill Products Inc. will pay about $485,000 in back wages to 37 Hispanics and African-American men who were denied jobs at the plant in Lancaster.
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — United Auto Workers President Bob King is calling on industry leaders to reject what he says is a multi-billion-dollar campaign to destroy organized labor. Speaking to a conference of vehicle and parts manufacturers Thursday in Traverse City, Mich., King said the union is sincere in its push for a more cooperative relationship with management.
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — Carmakers will squeeze more miles out gasoline and diesel engines to meet the tougher fuel economy standards announced by the government last week, the CEO of Chrysler said Wednesday. Sergio Marchionne, also head of Italy's Fiat SpA, said changes to the internal combustion engine, and not electric or hydrogen fuel cell technology, will be the answer to meeting the new standards.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Businesses cut back on orders for airplanes, autos and heavy machinery in June, lowering demand for factory goods for the second time in three months. The Commerce Department said Wednesday that orders to U.S. factories fell 0.8 percent in June. A key category that tracks business investment plans managed a small increase, offering a positive sign amid other gloomy reports on the economy.
