As the rise in temporary workers continues to affect our industry, it’s important that plant managers have a strategy for managing this new crop of personnel. Many plant-wide initiatives, like a strong safety culture, for example, are grassroots efforts that come from the ground up. They succeed through repetition and camaraderie; through consistent training and knowledge of and respect for the equipment in use.

Manufacturing Technology Orders Down In June

June U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $426.83 million according to AMT - The Association For Manufacturing Technology. This total, as reported by companies participating in the USMTO program, was down 5.8 percent from May and down 5.7 percent when compared with the total of $452.75 million reported for June 2012. With a year-to-date total of $2,538.55 million, 2013 is down 5.7 percent compared with 2012.

Vehicle-Charging Company Warns About Prospects

Ecotality Inc., which makes charging systems for electric vehicles, said Monday that it could be forced into a sale or bankruptcy filing "in the very near future" after disappointing sales and suspension of payments from the federal government. The company said that it hired a restructuring adviser to evaluate options including new financing or a possible sale.

Honda Supplier Plans New Plant In Pell City

A company that provides reusable containers for parts at Honda's factory in Alabama says it has plans to build a new manufacturing plant in Pell City. AL.com reported Friday that Trinity Design Group LLC's nearly $1 million facility will initially employ 35 people with plans to increase to more than 70. The company focuses on sustainable packaging and the new facility will cover 32,000 square feet.

Small Cars Perform Poorly In Crash Tests

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety released the latest results of their new small overlap crash test, the Nissan Sentra, Kia Soul and Kia Forte did not hold up well, but the Honda Civic received the best crash rating. In all, half of the 12 compact and subcompact cars tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety fared poorly.
