NAGOYA, Aug. 31 (Kyodo) — Toyota Motor Corp. and other major automakers in Japan will restart their operations on Thursdays from September after having to shift them to the weekends due to power shortages triggered by the March 11 earthquake. The carmakers suspended operations on Thursdays and Fridays in July and August to avoid boosting electricity consumption during busy hours under the initiative of the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association.
OAKES, N.D. (AP) — A plant in the southeast North Dakota city of Oakes that was slated for closure at the end of August was saved when it was bought by a locally owned company. Gov. Jack Dalrymple says Harris Machine Co. has purchased the JLG Industries plant in the community of about 1,700 people and plans to expand it.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska company is planning to spend $10 million expanding its manufacturing plant in Omaha and hire about 30 more workers. Intersystems, which makes equipment for grain elevators, processing plants and port facilities, announced its plans on Tuesday. Its products help sort grains, powders, rock and wood chips.
ROME, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say at least one person was burned in an explosion at a northwest Georgia manufacturing plant. Rome-Floyd County Fire Chief Gordon Henderson tells the Rome News-Tribune (http://bit.ly/nLyfN6) that one person was being treated for steam burns. He did not know the extent of the person's injuries.

BRYAN, Ohio (AP) — Ohio's Spangler Candy Co. is adding jobs and space to produce more candy canes sold under brand names such as Jelly Belly and Cinnabon. The company said in a statement Monday that it will spend $400,000 to upgrade and install two candy cane production lines at its plant in Bryan, the northwest Ohio community where Spangler is based.
RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) — The Department of Energy may not be able to complete the Hanford vitrification plant for the projected $12.2 billion, according to an internal DOE document. The $12.2 billion figure is at risk due to uncertainties in congressional funding for the project, increased cost growth outpacing savings and delays in resolving technical waste mixing issues, according to a briefing document by the Construction Project Review team.
